Twenty-seven years following Nigeria's transition back to civilian governance, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed that the genuine measure of democracy is determined by whether people enjoy greater security, enhanced living conditions, more prospects, and increased confidence in government bodies.
A declaration released to commemorate the anniversary of democratic rule, authored by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated that the event calls for thoughtful consideration of the state of leadership and the daily realities faced by Nigerians.
The ADC argued that the key issues defining the country's path toward democracy continue to be simple, posing the following questions: "Is your current life improved compared to earlier times? Are you feeling more secure now than previously? Has your confidence in the government increased?" It further stated that, according to them, answers to these inquiries highlight significant public worry and the necessity for immediate review of policies.
The gathering highlighted that instability continues to be a significant issue impacting everyday living across various regions of the nation. It characterized the scenario as one where anxiety and unpredictability still shape societal and financial endeavors, with localities responding differently to safety issues. Additionally, it mentioned that in certain locations, people have needed to change their schedules, such as education and agricultural tasks, because of security-related challenges.
As stated, "In Nigeria, life has taken on a Hobbesian nature: harsh, violent, and brief." The ADC employed this expression to highlight what it termed the critical need to enhance citizen protection and improve security cooperation at every level of governance.
The gathering highlighted the financial challenges experienced by families, pointing out that increasing expenses for groceries, transportation, accommodation, medical care, and schooling keep influencing the daily lives of numerous households. It mentioned that these circumstances have put pressure on employees' earnings and made it harder to maintain small enterprises and meet family requirements.
Regarding youth empowerment, the ADC voiced worry that numerous Nigerian youths have few job options, with some seeking chances abroad. It noted that this pattern highlights the necessity for increased funding in generating jobs, enhancing skill training, and promoting innovative economic growth.
The statement also emphasized what it referred to as a slow erosion of public faith in democratic systems. It stated that building stronger trust between people and authorities necessitates ongoing responsibility, sensitivity to citizen needs, and better provision of governmental services.
Nevertheless, the party emphasized that these issues should not be seen as a sign of despair regarding Nigeria's prospects. Instead, it stated that they serve as an invitation for meaningful participation and strategic policymaking focused on enhancing people's well-being and ensuring national security.
Considering the importance of June 12 and democracy, the ADC mentioned that the best approach to celebrate Nigeria's move towards democracy is by honestly assessing achievements and difficulties, along with a dedication to leadership focused on reforms.
The party further stated that issues of instability and financial difficulties must be tackled with integrated and collaborative approaches. It emphasized that safety should not only be seen as a matter for the armed forces but rather as an overarching governance challenge encompassing intelligence, technological advancements, organizational cooperation, and involvement from local communities.
Based on its strategic vision, the ADC introduced a security model that relies on intelligence, backed by technology, and tailored to local needs. It further highlighted the importance of enhanced cooperation between national, regional, and municipal officials, along with better synchronization across law enforcement bodies.
The party also mentioned that evaluating security effectiveness should focus on results impacting daily living—like farmers being able to reach their land securely, merchants traveling without anxiety, and pupils going to school without interruptions.
Regarding economic management, the ADC stated that democratic achievement should be evident through concrete enhancements in people's quality of life. It highlighted that although broad financial metrics might indicate advancement, the true test is whether families feel less burdened by economic challenges.
The group promoted sustainable development, increased wealth distribution, and greater chances for people, stating that democracy must ensure not just civil liberties but also financial respect and upward movement within society.
Highlighting its plan for change, the ADC stated that it backs initiatives focused on lowering administrative costs, enhancing effectiveness in government expenditures, and making sure that economic changes lead to improved quality of life for people. Additionally, it stressed its backing for local enterprises, safeguards for those with limited incomes, and actions intended to alleviate rising price levels.
In farming, the group advocated for a fresh emphasis on ensuring food safety, involving better machinery, water management systems, stockpiling facilities, and more robust emergency food reserves. It stated these steps are crucial for maintaining stable food supplies and minimizing exposure to cost fluctuations.
Regarding governance and oversight, the ADC emphasized the significance of openness in government finances, fair enforcement of legal principles, and structural changes aimed at enhancing democratic values. It further stated that holding public office must be seen as an obligation demanding dedication and commitment to the people.
The gathering decided that Nigeria's advancement toward democracy should finally be assessed not through political speeches or government declarations, but through tangible enhancements in safety, financial stability, and trust in leadership.
