At minimum, 14 individuals lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes targeting southern Lebanon on Monday, according to the nation's health department, with ongoing bombardments continuing even amid warnings from Iran about potential retaliation against Israel should it maintain its assault on the region.
Reports of strikes emerged in Marwaniyah and Sur following statements from Israel and Iran indicating that they had concluded a cycle of retaliatory attacks initiated by Tehran in response to Israel's operations in Lebanon.
"An attack by an Israeli adversary on the city of Tyre, close to the Red Cross facility, led to five fatalities and eight injured individuals, with four being Red Cross medical personnel," stated the Lebanese Health Ministry in a press release.
A representative from Lebanon's cultural ministry stated that Israeli attacks the day before had also caused damage to a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tyr.
A subsequent attack at Marwanieh resulted in the deaths of two individuals, one being a child, with ten others injured, whereas an early morning assault in Zifta within the Nabatieh region led to seven fatalities, "including a Syrian child and a woman," as reported by the health ministry.
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, stated that it had struck Israeli forces within Lebanon, yet did not report any assaults on Israeli soil.
Israel will keep carrying out actions in Lebanon
Iran has cautioned that it will restart hostilities if Israel keeps attacking Lebanon, yet Israeli officials stated on Monday that they won't back down.
As it declared an end to its strikes against Israel, Iran's armed forces headquarters stated, "if acts of aggression and hostility persist, particularly in southern Lebanon, even harsher and more devastating actions than previously seen will occur."
However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz promised following the warning that the armed forces would "keep operating in Lebanon against the militant group Hezbollah."
He stated that Israel would target the southern neighborhoods of Beirut in response to each attack against northern Israel.
"We firmly oppose Iran's warnings. Any effort by Iran to connect Lebanon with itself and strike Israel will face strong resistance, as occurred yesterday," Katz stated.
Iran demands that stopping the broader Middle East conflict should involve a truce in Lebanon, and on Sunday launched missiles toward Israel following attacks on southern neighborhoods of Beirut later that same day.
Lebanon claims that Israeli attacks have resulted in over 3,600 deaths since Hezbollah brought Lebanon into the Middle Eastern conflict on February 2nd through missile launches targeting Israel, as retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli assassination of Iran's top leader.
Following an April truce between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel set up what is known as the Yellow Line within Lebanese territory, approximately twelve kilometers from its northern frontier, where military forces are currently active.
