A cybersecurity breach targeting one of Hong Kong's major home appliance retailers, Shun Hing Group, has exposed the private details of over 1 million individuals, as reported by the city’s data protection authority.
The Personal Data Privacy Commission announced on Thursday that it has initiated an inquiry into the matter following receipt of a data security violation notification from Shun Hing Group on March 23.
According to the most recent details shared by the company, the personal information of up to 1.05 million individuals, primarily its clients, was illegally encrypted, stated the regulator.

More than 920,000 clients had their personal details exposed, comprising names, home addresses, and electronic mail contacts. Approximately 1,000 staff members were similarly impacted, with further sensitive information like identification document numbers, banking records, and wage-related data at risk.
In a statement released in April, Shun Hing Group mentioned that it identified unauthorized entry and harm to its computing networks resulting from a hacking attack, noting that it has subsequently submitted a police complaint and hired an external group of IT security specialists to look into the matter.
Established in 1953, the firm serves as the only representative and authorized seller of the renowned Japanese electronic corporation Panasonic within Hong Kong and Macau.
