If you've ever sighed when considering the task of moving a houseplant from one container to another, those times might soon come to an end.
This is due to a Scottish company introducing the world's initial pot designed to grow together with your plant, implying you might not have to transplant it ever again.
The latest Helix pot from POTR draws influence from foldable designs employed by NASA Engineers have enhanced its soil capacity by eight times, growing from a small 0.25-liter container to a larger two-liter pot.
Instead of frequently taking out a plant and moving it into bigger pots, users can just rotate and stretch the container then add new soil around the current roots.
Andrew Flynn, co-founder of POTR , said to the Daily Mail: “Transplanting may seem easy, but it requires some courage. You must recognize when a plant is prepared, carefully remove it without harming the roots, and pray it adapts well to its new environment.”
It’s an aspect many individuals consider intimidating, particularly for those who are just starting out with plant care.
We aimed to create a container that expands along with the plant, rather than requiring individuals to restart the process each time additional room is needed.
As the plant grows, the container automatically increases in size, simplifying maintenance and keeping it thriving without the hassle of complete transplantation.
The design allows the same container to nurture a plant from a seed or cutting until it becomes more mature.
It also features an hidden water tank and sponge that enables your plant to manage its own hydration for as long as two weeks.
The device took nearly two years to develop, moving from initial sketches to 1,132 functional models.
The company drew inspiration from origami and folding designs utilized in aerospace, where devices need to stay small until they unfold.
Most containers are made for just one phase of a plant's growth," Mr. Flynn explained. "We aimed to develop a single system that can adjust as a plant moves from seeds or cuttings to a more mature state.
We have invested many years improving the design as we believed there was a more effective approach to address an issue that has remained largely unchanged over centuries.
The kettle has already drawn attention from individuals across the globe since its debut on Kickstarter.
Although pricing is currently in the initial phase, the individual unit is anticipated to be sold for approximately £30 once it becomes available to the public in October.
The Helix features detachable components that enable growers to cultivate basil, mint, parsley, cilantro, oregano, and sprouts.
A support plate holds cuttings in place while roots grow, and an adjustable lattice can be included for plants that climb.
Mr. Flynn, who co-owns the business with his wife Eilidh Cunningham, stated that the current focus highlights how individuals "understand the issue—that cultivating plants and herbs at home should be straightforward, yet tasks like watering and potting can make it seem more complex than necessary."
In 2019, POTR introduced its initial product—a self-watering, origami-themed compact plant container—via Kickstarter, achieving comparable accomplishments.
The initial POTR pot was eventually chosen by investor Deborah Meaden as the Sustainable Product of the Year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
