Green Tech Boosts Construction Efficiency at UDSM

Scientists affiliated with the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) have introduced several homegrown innovations designed to cut down building expenses, decrease greenhouse gas output, and enhance power effectiveness, as Tanzania looks for eco-friendly approaches within its construction and energy industries.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday during the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), lab scientist Mr. Jason Kaijage stated that these innovations aim to address climate change by offering eco-friendly substitutes for traditional building materials and methods.

One of the new developments is Duracem, a low-temperature asphalt solution designed for building and repairing roads. Instead of needing heat prior to use, this material can be applied directly, lowering pollution levels and saving money.

Mr. Kaijage mentioned that the technology has the potential to reduce road construction expenses by anywhere from 20 to 25 percent, enabling roads to be reopened just two to three hours following treatment.

"Traditional asphalt emits toxic fumes when heated and raises building expenses. Our low-temperature asphalt is more cost-effective and eco-friendly," he stated.

The group has also created a supportive substance placed under road surfaces in regions experiencing elevated water tables and salt content to enhance the longevity of roads.

Another advancement, Nova Cement, is developed for regions with elevated levels of humidity and salinity, where regular cement tends to degrade more quickly. It is also suitable for manufacturing long-lasting pavement blocks and bricks.

Scientists have enhanced insulating bricks and panel walls designed to control internal temperature levels, decreasing dependence on cooling systems and minimizing power usage.

The group has additionally created a substance capable of cleaning biogas derived from organic waste and animal dung, enabling it to be pressurized into containers for home consumption.

Mr. Kaijage mentioned that the study, which lasted over two years, has finished lab tests, with certain items, such as cold asphalt, having already been tested in pilot projects.

"The current challenge lies in transitioning from small-scale operations to large-scale manufacturing so that greater numbers of individuals can gain advantages," he stated.
