On the 3rd, the Navy revealed that the second ship from the ROKS Jang Yeong-sil-class submarine (classified as 3,600 tons) will be called 'Seo Hui,' and the fifth vessel of the new frigate (also 3,600 tons) will be named 'Pyeongtaek.'
Submarines receive their names from people who made significant contributions to military efforts, seafaring advancements, science, opposition to external powers, and campaigns for self-rule, thereby gaining nationwide admiration. Frigates are typically named after major urban centers, capital towns of provinces, or smaller to mid-sized cities.
'Seo Hui,' the namesake of the second new submarine, was an individual from the Goryeo Dynasty known for defending against Khitan attacks and protecting the six states east of the Yalu River. The Navy said, "The remarkable military and diplomatic accomplishments of Premier Seo Hui, as well as his determination to address national challenges, were considered fitting for naming a submarine, which serves as a key element of naval protection."
The 'Pyeongtaek,' the fifth newly built frigate, received its name from Pyeongtaek City, which houses the Navy's 2nd Fleet Headquarters. The Navy stated that this choice took into account the vessel's planned assignment to the 2nd Fleet and Pyeongtaek's significance as an important maritime base for safeguarding the Western Sea.
The submarine Seo Hui, which is still being built, is set to be handed over to the Navy in 2028, whereas the frigate Pyeongtaek is expected to arrive in 2027.
