Soldiers from Sector 6, the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, have prevented an assault allegedly carried out by armed individuals against the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies located in Kuru, within the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Nonetheless, the soldiers killed one of the attackers and retrieved a rifle connected to a deceased soldier.
The news emerges just over two weeks following an attack by armed individuals at the institution, resulting in the death of three security personnel.
A message published on X on Thursday stated that the failed assault took place around 12:10 a.m., as attackers sought to break into the institution's grounds during the night.
As per the Army, alert soldiers on patrol quickly confronted the aggressors in a firefight, disabling one of the attackers, while the remaining individuals fled wounded into the nearby elevated terrain.
It mentioned that no military personnel were harmed or wounded throughout the transfer.
The message stated, "Forces from Sector 6, Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, successfully prevented an assault by alleged armed criminals on a security post at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, located in Kuru, within the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, during the early morning hours of Thursday, 2 July 2026."
The attackers tried to break into the institution's boundary during the night around 12:10 a.m. They quickly faced off against alert soldiers in a critical firefight, leading to the elimination of one attacker, with the remaining ones escaping wounded toward nearby elevated areas. The soldiers did not suffer any losses.
The military also revealed that soldiers found an AK-style rifle marked with serial number CO-3175, containing 16 rounds of 7.62mm specialized ammo, from the identified individual.
As per the report, initial inquiries indicated that the firearm initially belonged to a Nigerian Army personnel who died in combat during a prior clash with unknown armed groups at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on April 11, 2026.

It was mentioned that the retrieved rifle has been placed under military control as inquiries proceed to identify potential connections between the thwarted assault and earlier security events along the Kuru-Vom corridor.
The body of the deactivated suspect has also been transported to a morgue by the relevant officials.
The military stated that soldiers have increased their efforts in controlling areas, conducting removal operations, and chasing fugitive individuals near NIPSS Kuru and nearby villages.
It stated that the actions were designed to stop lawbreakers from organizing again and to protect the inhabitants, staff of the institution, and other essential national resources.
"The scenario continues to be well managed, with regular operations at the institution and nearby region proceeding uninterrupted," the statement further noted.
Stressing its dedication to safety within Plateau State, the Nigerian Army stated that Operation Enduring Peace will remain focused on safeguarding people and critical national facilities, as well as bringing long-term stability throughout the region.
The military called on citizens to stay composed, continue with their legal endeavors, and quickly inform authorities about any unusual actions or behaviors.
Additionally, the institution verified the incident through a statement released on Thursday by its Director of Public Relations, Dr. Osime Samuel.
Samuel stated that the assailants clashed with security officers in a violent firefight but had to withdraw after being met with what was called a quick and well-organized reaction from the security teams.
As per the report, one of the attackers was eliminated during the confrontation, whereas multiple others allegedly fled with different levels of wounds.

During the confrontation, one attacker was disabled, whereas the remaining individuals reportedly fled, sustaining different levels of harm.
