Sudan's Central Bank Boosts Foreign Currency to Stabilize the Pound

July 1, 2026 (Khartoum) – The Sudanese Central Bank stated that it remains committed to injecting foreign currency into commercial banks to fulfill the requirements of importers, a strategy they claim has led to a significant drop in the exchange rate.

The monetary authority also noted substantial advancements in digital banking transaction services through the Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) during the last 18 months.

The unofficial exchange rate saw a minor drop in foreign currency values throughout Monday's transactions, influenced by the central bank consistently meeting demands for import funding. The U.S. dollar was exchanged at approximately 5,000 Sudanese pounds, down from 5,100 pounds on the prior day, whereas the UAE dirham hit 1,415 pounds, and the cost of one gram of gold remained steady at 580,000 pounds.

The head of the Central Bank, Amna Mirghani Hassan El-Tom, met on Monday with senior managers of active banks at the central bank's office in Khartoum State, as reported by the bank. El-Tom informed the officers about initiatives aimed at stabilizing the currency exchange sector through increasing available funds to satisfy importers' needs.

The leader emphasized the significance of improving collaboration and communication among the central bank and commercial institutions to meet monetary policy objectives. She mentioned that these actions led to a significant drop in the exchange rate, stating that liquidity injections will remain ongoing until circumstances return to normal.

She further urged banks to report their customers' applications for foreign currency-based import financing on a daily basis.

El-Tom stated that the central bank is striving to develop correspondent banking connections with Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia in order to facilitate trade transactions via the formal banking network.

She reinforced the central bank's dedication to tackling issues within the banking industry, maintaining regular oversight of the foreign exchange market, and implementing essential actions to boost stability. Achieving effective monetary policies depends heavily on strong cooperation and alignment between the central bank and commercial banks, she noted.

Abbas Abdullah Abbas, leader of the Sudanese Banks Association, commended the central bank's collaborative method and its contribution to maintaining economic steadiness following the conflict. He noted that the ongoing influx of foreign currency to fulfill importers' demands significantly aided in stabilizing the exchange rate and its consistent enhancement each day.

Abbas also highlighted the significance of modernizing banking frameworks aimed at fighting money laundering and funding terrorism, with multiple bank executives expressing their complete backing for the central bank's initiatives.

In addition, the Central Bank of Sudan stated that its affiliated company, the Electronic Banking Services Company, experienced substantial increase in transfers between accounts through the BBAN system. A total of more than 234 million transactions were completed between 2025 and the first half of 2026.

A company performance update released on June 25 indicated that the volume of transactions reached 141,461,335 during the first six months of 2026, compared to 92,800,820 in 2025, marking an increase of 52.44%. The institution noted that this metric highlights the speeding-up of digital evolution within the Sudanese financial industry.

The monetary authority stated that the BBAN facility allows for immediate fund transfers between banking accounts through a single account identifier, removing the necessity of visiting physical offices or dealing with cash. This improves access to financial services and aids in moving towards a society without cash transactions.

The monetary authority announced its intention to keep advancing and broadening the digital payment platform to cater to consumers and aid the country's goals for digital development.
