On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu launched Phase I of the Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos portion of the 700-kilometer Akwanga–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri Expressway, calling it an additional achievement within the Renewed Hope Initiative.
The President, who was present at the event through the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, stated that this project marks the fourth legacy highway effort under his leadership and demonstrates the government's commitment to developing top-tier infrastructure aimed at enhancing national unity, boosting road security, promoting commerce, and generating economic prospects throughout the nation.
Tinubu stated that the 700-kilometer expressway, authorized by the Federal Executive Council, is being implemented in stages and segments to maintain effectiveness and meet deadlines.
He remembered that on June 4, 2026, he launched Phase II of the project stretching from Gombe to Biu in Gombe and Borno states, whereas the start of the 125-kilometer Akwanga-Kaduna-Jos section represented yet another major step forward in completing this large-scale initiative.
As stated by the President, the whole corridor consists of five key segments: Akwanga–Kaduna–Jos (125km), Jos–Bauchi (135km), Bauchi–Gombe (162km), Gombe–Biu (125km), and Biu–Maiduguri (188km). These were all planned to link localities, promote trade, and enhance economic cooperation within the North-Central and North-East areas.
He also shared progress reports on additional major highway initiatives during his tenure, indicating approval of the rate of development across the country.
He revealed that Part I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway within Lagos is largely finished, whereas Part II in Ogun State is at 60 percent completion.
He mentioned that Sections IIIA and IIIB in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States have achieved 20 percent progress; Sections IVA and IVB in Akwa Ibom have registered 5 percent progress; and Section V has been contracted, with construction currently ongoing.
Along the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the President mentioned that progress has been consistent, with Section I in Sokoto State reaching 40 percent completion, Section II in Kebbi State at 60 percent, Section III in Ogun State at 18 percent, and Section IV in Oyo State now being prepared for commencement. He pledged to Nigerian citizens that efforts on the remaining parts will speed up.
The President also emphasized advancements along the Trans-Saharan Trade Corridor connecting Calabar, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Abuja. He mentioned that work on the Ebonyi segment is now 15 percent complete, while preparations continue in Benue State, with technical plans being developed for other parts of the route.
Showing belief in the effective implementation of all ongoing initiatives, President Tinubu stated that the roads will significantly change transport, boost economic development, generate employment opportunities, draw in investments, and promote nationwide wealth.
He also instructed the Minister of Public Works, in conjunction with the Federal Surveyor-General and state governors concerned, to secure sufficient buffer zones along the project routes to allow for subsequent development, support facilities, enhanced roadway design, toll mechanisms, and long-term upkeep.
The President urged those working on different projects to view themselves as developmental allies instead of just service providers, by involving local young people, sharing expertise, and helping build the nation's sustained capabilities.
At the event, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, praised President Tinubu for what he called his remarkable bravery, foresight, intellect, perseverance, and extraordinary mental acuity in driving an unparalleled national infrastructure revitalization initiative.
Senator Umahi pointed out that even with current economic difficulties, the President has continued to show strong determination in building and repairing key road systems across almost all parts of the nation. He referred to the continuing major highway initiatives as proof of a leader who is dedicated to national progress beyond political interests and geographical divisions.
As stated by the Minister, the New Dawn infrastructure plan is gradually building the groundwork for a more interconnected, competitive, and economically vibrant Nigeria, with highway developments spanning all 36 states currently being built or progressing through different phases.
Umahi emphasized the federal government's dedication to providing long-lasting, top-notch infrastructure that will benefit future Nigerian generations, promoting national cohesion, increasing economic prospects, and advancing sustainable growth throughout the country.
