Four individuals lost their lives when a massive group assembled for an event marking Mexico's progression to the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup held in North America.
As reported by BBC on the 2nd, after Mexico secured a 2-0 win against Ecuador in the Round of 32 match of the FIFA World Cup held in North America at Mexico City Stadium on the 1st (Korean time), more than one million individuals assembled near the Angel of Independence statue in central Mexico City for a festive gathering. Authorities from Mexico City revealed that four individuals— a 48-year-old female, a 44-year-old male, a 30-year-old male, and a 19-year-old female—lost their lives during the incident.
One of the individuals was a 30-year-old who succumbed due to an epileptic episode. The other three were discovered unresponsive by medical personnel and taken to a hospital, yet they eventually passed away from suffocation. Mexico City mayor Clara Brugada extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected families and pledged complete assistance. She further called upon everyone, saying, "Always commemorate with a spirit of accountability, thoughtfulness, and compassion."
Mexico made history by advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time in eight years, following their participation in the 2018 Russia World Cup, which led to joyous festivities across Mexico City. The greater Mexico City region has a population exceeding 20 million, marking it as one of the world's most crowded areas.
