Leader Calls for Major Policy Overhaul in Key Sectors

On the 12th, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sig from the People Power Party said, "We call upon the Lee Jae Myung administration and the Democratic Party of South Korea to adjust the country's top three policy priorities based on the public opinion shown in the June 3 local elections." Having been chosen as floor leader during the party's leadership vote on the 10th, Jeong conducted his initial media conference following his appointment that same day.

At the National Assembly that morning, floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig conducted a media conference and stated, "It’s essential to shift from an agriculture-based economic strategy that exclusively emphasizes the KOSPI index influenced by American-origin artificial intelligence developments, and instead enhance the core strengths of our economy while making structural improvements in sectors like housing, taxation, and employment regulations." He further mentioned, "We advocate for a full-scale transformation."

Floor leader Jeong said, "Real estate strategies ought to increase private sector contributions and quickly reinstate the housing progression." He also mentioned, "Fiscal measures require a thorough revision to establish an equitable taxation framework that aligns expansion with fairness, supporting the continued economic advancement." Additionally, he pointed out, "Concerning workforce regulations, additional laws addressing the disorder at workplaces due to the yellow envelope act should be urgently addressed."

Concerning the establishment of a special committee within the National Assembly to examine the issue of insufficient ballots, Floor Leader Jeong suggested, "The People Power Party should take charge of the special committee, with an equal number of members from both the Democratic Party and opposition parties." Nevertheless, he stated, "A parliamentary investigation is distinct from a special prosecutor; they must operate independently."

Furthermore, before discussions with the Democratic Party of Korea—the party in power with a majority of seats—floor leader Jeong proposed that the People Power Party should assume leadership roles in five permanent committees of the National Assembly: the Committee on Legislation and Judiciary, the Committee on Planning and Finance, the Committee on Trade, Industry, Energy, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Startups, the Committee on National Policy, and the Committee on Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation. Floor leader Jeong remarked, "The key idea behind the assembly structure is the standardization of the National Assembly and the revival of balance among branches of government. The Committee on Legislation and Judiciary must go back to the opposition." He further noted, "In order to guide changes in economic and real estate policies, the opposition should also manage the four committees related to the economy."

At the same time, floor leader Jeong designated Rep. Kim Mi-ae, a seasoned legislator from Busan who has served two terms, as the party's principal policy deputy floor leader on that day. The day before, Rep. Kim Seung-su, another veteran representative from Daegu, was assigned as the primary administrative deputy floor leader. Rep. Yoon Yong-geun took up the role of secretary-general at the floor leader’s office, while Representatives Choi Soo-jin, Choi Eun-seok, and Kim Tae-gyu were selected as senior spokespeople. Both Reps. Yoon Yong-geun and Kim Tae-gyu won their seats in the by-elections for National Assembly members conducted alongside the June 3 local elections.
