A third-year Biochemistry student from the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Zaharadeen Nuhu, passed away following serious injuries he sustained when attackers allegedly robbed him at a private dormitory in the Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The head of student services at the university, Professor Ibrahim Magawata, revealed this information through a notice published on Thursday, which was shared with reporters in Birnin Kebbi.

As per the notice, the late individual, originally from Niger State, was assaulted by a band of alleged robbers at his home away from campus in Kalgo. He suffered serious knife wounds and was taken to a medical facility for care, but eventually passed away due to his injuries during the early morning hours of Thursday.

It is with deep sorrow and complete acceptance of Allah’s decree that the university administration confirms the passing of our beloved student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a third-year student from the Department of Biochemistry.

"A group of robbers assaulted him at one of the private dormitories in Kalgo, causing serious wounds from a machete. He was rushed to the hospital, but he unfortunately died early today," said Magawata.

The dean mentioned that the university administration had reached out to the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Branch, and that inquiries regarding the event have started.

He mentioned that security checks have been increased in Kalgo and other off-campus areas where students live.

Magawata also revealed that a meeting was planned with the proprietors of private dormitories in Kalgo to implement enhanced safety protocols, such as better illumination and the hiring of nighttime attendants.

He encouraged students to stay composed, alert, and compliant with the law, while refraining from sharing unconfirmed details that could lead to fear. He further recommended they steer clear of moving around at night, travel together when needed, and quickly inform authorities about any unusual individuals or events.

He stated that the university continues to prioritize the security and well-being of its students.

The departed was laid to rest on Thursday after a Janazah prayer took place at the mosque affiliated with the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.

The university administration expressed their condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and whole student body following the passing, and offered prayers for his eternal rest.

At the same time, certain students who communicated with our reporter under the requirement of confidentiality voiced worries about the safety conditions in dormitories located outside the campus. They claimed that pupils are encountering multiple security risks such as assaults, thefts of mobile devices, and incidents involving sexual misconduct, and they urged for enhanced protective actions in regions where learners live.
