Western countries criticize Jewish settlement aggression in the West Bank
The UK, France, Australia, Canada, and Norway stated on Tuesday that they have imposed collective penalties targeting "individuals and organizations responsible for funding and supporting" acts of settlement-related violence in the occupied West Bank.
In a shared declaration, the foreign ministers of the five nations stated that the collaborative effort aims to ensure extreme Israeli settlers face consequences for the worsening conditions in the West Bank.
"Those restrictions will hinder the financial channels that have enabled radical colonist groups to operate without consequence in the West Bank and show the UK's dedication to a two-state framework," stated British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
The number of Israeli military actions and violent incidents involving Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied areas have significantly increased following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which initiated Israel's conflict in Gaza.
The five nations additionally cautioned that they would be ready to implement additional measures should the Israeli administration fail to resolve the unrest.
France's foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, stated that France has also prohibited Israel's finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, as well as four heads of settlement organizations and 21 settlers from entering the nation.
"Bezalel Smotrich strongly advocates for the annexation of the West Bank, as he has clearly stated, including establishing new settlements in the region, resettling Gaza, causing the economic downfall of the Palestinian Authority, and the resulting negative effects on the Palestinian people — this approach is one that the vast majority of the global community rejects, with a strong commitment to the two-state solution," Barrot mentioned.
As a reply, Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it "strongly opposes the humiliating actions."
