Over half of South Koreans aged 20s and 30s have expressed curiosity about North Korea and matters related to reunification, as per a new poll.
The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC), an official advisory group established under the Constitution, released on the 12th the findings of a public sentiment poll focused on unification efforts among 1,200 participants aged 19 to 39 who took part through an online platform. Organized by Korea Research International, the study revealed that 54.7% of those surveyed showed curiosity about North Korea, whereas 52% demonstrated interest in matters related to reunification. The research spanned from May 27 up until the first day of this month.
The study included 25 questions addressing topics such as interest in North Korea/unity matters, perspectives on the future of the Korean Peninsula, peace/uniting democratic civic education, public discussion, and governmental approaches towards North Korea and unity. When questioned regarding their preferred path for cross-border relations, 36.8% of participants opted for "Strive for unification over the long-term but focus on maintaining peaceful coexistence between both Koreas at present." The percentage who responded with "Work towards unification eventually but remain independent countries for now" stood at 20.3%, whereas 19.4% picked "Develop relationships between the two Koreas without seeking unification." Just 11.8% backed "Aggressively work towards unification as the main objective," and 5.4% were in favor of "Keep things as they are, despite ongoing tensions."
Of those aged in their 20s and 30s, 39.1% reported having participated in unification or peace education as part of standard classroom instruction. Another 15% experienced this type of learning via after-school clubs or specific seminars. Additional exposure came from initiatives run by governmental or public organizations (10.2%) and non-governmental organizations or community groups (4.7%). In contrast, 22.8% mentioned they had never engaged with any form of unification or peace education.
With regard to the involvement of North Korea's Naegohyang Women’s FC in the AFC Women’s Champions League taking place in Suwon last month, 64.3% of participants stated they were "not interested," whereas 35.7% showed some level of interest.
