July 30, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The number of cholera cases and deaths in Sudan's West and North Kordofan regions has reached 911 infections with 127 people losing their lives, according to the Sudanese Ministry of Health on Tuesday, as volunteers raised concerns about critical shortages of medical supplies.
The Al-Mazroub region in Northern Kordofan has become the primary hub for the outbreak, with 300 cases reported and 16 fatalities recorded over three weeks following the virus spreading from adjacent West Kordofan, according to health officials.
The Ministry of Health stated in a release that it has set up three isolation and hydration centers in West Kordofan and formed a technical team to handle disease outbreaks and address the situation.
Volunteers working in North and West Kordofan, regions mostly controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have indicated severe lack of essential medical supplies even as patient numbers continue to increase.
The World Health Organization (WHO) mentioned on the social media site X that it is assisting with the situation in West Kordofan through supplying medical supplies, enhancing monitoring efforts, and offering water and hygiene services to limit the outbreak caused by fighting and migration.
According to the latest health report, the ministry stated there were no newly confirmed instances of dengue fever in Gedaref, Kassala, and White Nile regions, whereas the number of cases dropped in the River Nile area. Meanwhile, Blue Nile and Al-Jazirah provinces documented 108 occurrences of Hepatitis E, with no fatalities reported.
The ministry further stated that Sudanese officials are still conducting border inspections and taking temperatures of incoming travelers as part of measures aimed at preparing for Ebola.
Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim directed staff to accelerate the construction of an advanced Ebola quarantine facility, mentioning that the country's public health lab has enhanced its testing abilities.
The government admitted that the supply of 117 critical pandemic medications and supplies, such as IV fluids and malaria remedies, continues to vary between various regions.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health stated that a polio reference lab located in the Red Sea region has restarted its activities after undergoing a rehabilitation initiative supported by the World Health Organization, enabling Sudan to conduct internal testing of polio specimens for the initial time.
