July 1, 2026 (PORT SUDAN) – On Wednesday, the Sea Ports Corporation reported that the Southern Port of Port Sudan delivered excellent operational outcomes during June, welcoming 30 vessels and managing over 26,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
The Southern Port functions as Sudan's primary seaport and an essential link for its economic activities, mainly via its container handling processes amid the current conflict.
The company stated in a release that the container terminal welcomed 30 ships during the previous month, comprising 15 cargo vessels and 15 general freight ships.
The number of imported containers was 8,157, corresponding to 13,615 TEUs, representing 52.33% of the overall monthly volume.
The number of exported containers, covering both full and empty units, reached 7,436, equivalent to 12,404 TEUs, accounting for 47.67% of the overall shipment volume.
In June, the overall number of containers processed amounted to 15,593 units, which corresponds to 26,019 TEUs.
The government-controlled company stated that the outcomes demonstrate its initiatives to enhance productivity and facilitate international commerce.
The harbor has recently experienced enhanced operations, with the initial visit of massive container vessels occurring on Sunday.
The primary seaport of Sudan has historically encountered operational challenges that restricted its ability to accommodate big ships and impacted cargo transfer operations.
On June 16, Port Sudan restarted transshipment operations after an extended period, with the objective of revitalizing freight storage and onward shipment to nearby ports.
Although there have been recent advancements, Port Sudan still needs to be expanded and equipped with deeper docking areas. The present combined berth length measures 1,478 meters, along with a storage space of 1.48 million square meters, both of which continue to be insufficient when measured against international benchmarks.
