Industry specialists, regulatory authorities, and executives from corporate finance stated that a subtle digital transformation has ultimately overcome the persistent challenges hindering the defined contribution pension system.
They noted this during the 15th Annual Stakeholders' Forum organized by CrusaderSterling Pensions in Lagos.
Focusing on the theme "Pensions for All: Driving Inclusion and Innovation for Quality Retirement," the conference emphasized how the introduction of automated verification systems has significantly transformed the nation's pension sector.
For many years, the issue of "hanging remittances" cast a long shadow over Nigeria's pension framework, resulting in billions of naira being held in limbo because of small data mistakes.
At the annual conference, Funmilola Oluwajoba, Executive Director of Operations at CrusaderSterling Pensions, stated, "Prior to implementing the Pension Payment Solution Service Provider software, employers used to submit payments along with forms containing missing details."
Thus, we could not deposit the funds into the accounts of the respective parties. For instance, if an employer covered 15 individuals but only 10 had a PIN, the payments for those 10 would remain pending.
The implementation of specialized automatic verification software has effectively modified this script by integrating instant validation within the payment portal.
"By implementing PSSPs, the software now automatically verifies the contributor's PIN with the Pension Fund Administrator prior to processing payments," Oluwajoba said, highlighting that this straightforward digital exchange has ultimately resolved the issue of unclaimed funds.
The National Pension Commission has strongly supported this digital initiative by introducing rigorous adherence standards and automatic monitoring systems, completely redirecting regulatory attention toward openness and efficiency.
A Principal Manager from PenCom's South-West Zonal Office, Sarah Joseph, mentioned during a panel discussion that today's session centered around transparency, particularly highlighting the steps PenCom is taking to promote openness within the sector.
She further mentioned that we discussed several topics, including contributions and remittances, as well as responsibility, and the remittance mechanism established by PenCom.
In order to maintain adherence to regulations, PenCom has streamlined the application procedure for the Pension Clearance Certificate and implemented rigorous monetary fines which primarily advantage the workers instead of the state.
"The procedure for obtaining the Pension Clearance Certificate is now entirely handled via an online system. This initiative has effectively maintained adherence to regulations; delayed payments result in a 2% fine, with all such penalties being credited directly to the retirees' pension funds," said Joseph.
In addition to addressing the problem of delayed transfers, transferring power from the main regulatory body to separate PFAs has significantly reduced the period individuals must wait to obtain their retirement funds.
"Previously, benefit requests were submitted to PenCom, but now they are managed directly by the PFA," Oluwajoba mentioned.
"PenCom has set a maximum processing period for PFAs between 24 and 48 hours. For instance, if we get all the necessary documents at 8 am on Monday, we have until the end of business on Tuesday to finish the calculation and forward them to the Pension Fund Custodian. If your paperwork is fully completed, you should see the credit reflected by Wednesday night at the latest," she mentioned.
The integration of advanced technology with significant financial backing has revived strong institutional trust from business investors.
The Chief Financial Officer at Still Earth Holdings, Rotimi Odeyemi, stated, "We have entered the technological sector."
We aim to witness an agreement between the regulatory body and the PFA. We anticipate such technology to lead the way, ensuring that any advantages obtained from abroad are accessible. After logging in, you should receive all required details, submit your request, and track its resolution.
Supporting the platform's innovative strategy, Omolola Fakeye, the Director of Administration at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, stated that the industry's continued existence depends completely on ongoing digital transformation.
"They have vision and a great deal of expertise," Fakeye stated.
"They don't wait for the industry to keep pace with them; rather, they break free from conventional thinking, lead with innovation before trends emerge, and allow others to come after them. Thanks to their forward-thinking approach, their financial gains have been outstanding," she said.
