The federal administration has initiated an effort to unify procedures within every Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA) by implementing the newly introduced National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System throughout the country.
Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani, overseeing Communications, Innovation, and the Digital Economy, introduced the program during an important meeting with key stakeholders on Thursday in Abuja.
The event, titled "Integrating the Nigerian Digital Postcode into Government Services," gathered important participants to explore the implementation of this framework within public agencies.
Nadungu Gagare, the permanent secretary at the Ministry, stated that the project serves as an essential component within the nation's economic and security strategy.
"The Nigerian Digital Code signifies much more than an enhancement of mail delivery. It serves as a crucial national resource. In the absence of precise geographic data, authorities find it difficult to strategize efficiently, rescue teams waste critical moments, and banking entities encounter issues with confirmation," he mentioned.
Tijani stated that the alphanumeric digital postal code system served as a stepping stone and a pivotal milestone in Nigeria's digital evolution within the framework of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Initiative.
He mentioned that a precise nationwide address system could help governmental departments make more effective plans, enhance emergency responses, back reliable censuses and voting processes, increase access to banking services, and guarantee that people weren’t left out of crucial services due to inadequate geographic information.
The official praised NIPOST for taking the lead in the project and called on MDAs and state authorities to incorporate the system into their activities, emphasizing that its effectiveness would rely on cooperation, compatibility, and widespread implementation across the country.
Omotola Odeyemi, the postmaster general and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), stated that the digital postcode system establishes a "shared means of expressing locations" across the whole government.
She called on federal and local authorities to incorporate the infrastructure into their regular activities to enhance its effectiveness.
"Similar to how digital identity aids in identifying citizens, this National Digital Postcode enables us to identify where services, chances, and support initiatives should be directed. The achievement of this initiative won't be judged based on the quantity of postcodes created, but rather on the positive impact it makes on people's lives," said the head of NIPOST.
Madam Didi Esther Walson-Jack, chief of the Federal Civil Service, was represented by Dr Abdul Sule Garba, the Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, who promised complete administrative support for the implementation.
She mentioned that the public administration would have the necessary resources to adjust to the data-oriented framework.
"The implementation of Nigeria's digital postcode system is a planned effort aimed at greatly enhancing government operations, provision of services, and digital management throughout the nation," said Mrs. Walson-Jack.
The event included live showcases and expert discussion panels aimed at integrating the updated digital postcode framework with nationwide health care, social welfare, educational, and voting-related initiatives.
