The United Kingdom has unveiled enhanced cooperation with Nigeria aimed at boosting the nation's digital economy via a set of programs implemented as part of the UK's Digital Access Initiative.
Central to this collaboration is the State-Level Policy, Regulatory, and Institutional Reforms Facilitating Digital Transformation (SPRIRET) program, launched following the June trip of the UK Minister for Africa and International Development, Baroness Chapman MP.
The SPRIRET Initiative aims to facilitate changes within five states—Abia, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, and Niger—and to minimize bureaucratic obstacles, thereby encouraging increased funding and creativity in high-speed internet access, online services, and new technological developments. The United Kingdom plans to extend assistance to additional states in upcoming phases of the program.
SPRIRET will collaborate with the Initiative for Digital Inclusion to enhance state-level policies, management frameworks, digital infrastructure, and human resources, aiming to boost service provision, promote openness, and broaden public involvement in the digital economy.
The initiative is structured as a flexible framework suitable for national implementation, allowing states to create fresh economic prospects and promote broad-based digital advancement across large areas.

Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary of the State Government, Enugu State stated: "We would like to convey our heartfelt thanks to the British Deputy High Commission and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for their ongoing support towards Enugu State's developmental plans and for taking the lead in jointly developing the SPRIRET project according to the State's key objectives."
We believe the SPRIRET initiative tackles a vital void concerning policy, regulation, and institutional changes—elements essential for providing long-term guidance and efficiency to all present and upcoming digital initiatives within the State. We anticipate a fruitful and meaningful collaboration that will greatly support Enugu State's objective of establishing an equitable digital economy.
In addition to SPRIRET, the United Kingdom is backing specific initiatives aimed at boosting Nigeria's broader digital environment. A Technical Assistance Facility will boost the effectiveness of the Universal Service Provision Fund, enhancing its systems, organizational capabilities, and service delivery to achieve more equitable and long-term digital accessibility results.
Meanwhile, the Safeguarding Trust, Digital Rights, Inclusion and Data Ethics (STRIDE Nigeria) Initiative aims to encourage ethical data management by increasing understanding of individual rights as outlined in the Nigerian Data Protection Act, enhancing organizational adherence to regulations, and developing a stream of qualified experts.
Via a national "Own Your Data" campaign and focused fellowships, the program aims to provide individuals and companies with the understanding and resources needed to engage securely and assuredly in the digital marketplace.
These efforts highlight the UK's ongoing dedication to assisting Nigeria in developing a more inclusive, safe, and vibrant digital economy—fostering economic expansion, enhancing governance structures, and enabling individuals.
