The Hong Kong Meteorological Department raised the No 1 typhoon warning at 7:40 AM on Thursday when a developing tropical storm shifted southward from the area.

A tropical depression is expected to strengthen slowly and head generally towards Hainan Island today, staying at least 500 kilometers away from Hong Kong. 'The Standby Signal No 1 will continue to be in effect [on Thursday],' stated the Observatory.

By 8 am, the tropical depression located in the central area of the South China Sea was assessed to be approximately 630 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong and predicted to travel northwestward at around 22 km/h (13.7 mph), heading generally toward Hainan Island.

As the tropical storm approaches the shores of southern China, regional winds are expected to increase throughout Friday, according to the weather analyst.
