The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), headed by its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has sent heartfelt wishes to Nigerians on this year’s Democracy Day, which celebrates the 27th year since Nigeria began its continuous period of democratic rule on June 12, 2026.

In a gesture of good will, the Council issued a statement on Thursday, authored by its Public Affairs Officer, Abbas Jimoh, expressing solidarity with people throughout the nation as they honored the efforts of individuals who fought for the restoration and maintenance of democracy, adherence to constitutional principles, and the establishment of the rule of law.

It portrayed June 12 as a significant historical event that keeps highlighting the significance of justice, responsibility, inclusivity, and safeguarding human respect as essential elements for democracy to flourish.

Although recognizing the consistent advancements made since the restoration of democratic governance, the Council highlighted persistent security issues impacting various regions of the nation. Such challenges involve acts of robbery, abductions, extremism, and other forms of violence that keep threatening public safety, disrupting daily life, and influencing social cohesion as well as overall national growth.

The NSCIA extended condolences to those affected by instability and encouraged increased collaborative efforts across all societal groups to address the issue. It reiterated its stance that violence and crime in any shape or form are not tolerable, and implored individuals engaged in such activities to cease their actions and choose peace instead.

The Council once again emphasized the Islamic perspective that the value of human life is supreme, highlighting that no religion allows for the unlawful killing of people, abductions, or terrorist activities, and stating that these actions go against religious principles and ethical standards.

Regarding matters of public debate, the Council voiced worry about stories that might unintentionally link whole groups to illegal activities. It warned against broad assumptions in news coverage and public discussion, highlighting that these methods can worsen tensions in an already delicate nationwide situation.

It highlighted the importance of thorough, precise, and fair coverage, encouraging reporters, analysts, and thought leaders to present crimes solely based on personal accountability instead of collective attributes. As per the Council, this method is crucial for sustaining confidence and fostering cohesion within Nigeria's multifaceted community.

The declaration also highlighted that ongoing public debates regarding specific security events have led to varied understandings, and urged caution in forming judgments that might lack complete support from confirmed evidence. It additionally advocated for more focus on accurate data in public discourse to avoid confusion and conflict.

Citing public opinions mentioned in national discussions, the statement highlighted the remark made by Professor Farooq Kperogi in his piece entitled "Don’t Add Lies to the Terrorist Horror in Oyo," emphasizing the significance of steering clear of false information and unsubstantiated assertions when covering delicate security issues.

The Council emphasized once again that instability continues to be a common national challenge impacting people regardless of their religion or ethnicity, noting that numerous communities, including those with significant Muslim populations, have also experienced severe violence. It cautioned against any interpretation that might misrepresent this universal situation or assign group-based responsibility collectively.

Praising the continuous work of the federal government, security organizations, and neighborhood groups, the NSCIA urged greater cooperation, exchange of information, and long-term dedication to bringing back stability throughout the nation.

Additionally, it included supplications for law enforcement officers, requesting heavenly protection, power, and achievement for individuals who consistently work to ensure safety of people and assets.

The Committee ended by encouraging Nigerians to find fresh motivation from the principles of June 12, and to make sure that the efforts of democracy's founders continue to have significance via peace, fairness, and country solidarity.
