On this Democracy Day in Nigeria, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has urged citizens to renew their dedication to democratic values, engaged civic involvement, national solidarity, and constructive role in government affairs.

Paul Odenyi, the Deputy Director of Media and Communications, stated on Thursday that the Director General highlighted June 12 as an important emblem representing the perseverance, bravery, and resolve of Nigerians in their pursuit of democratic rule and safeguarding basic rights and liberties.

He pointed out that democracy continues to be the most open and responsible form of governance, allowing people the chance to freely select their leaders, ensure transparency from those in power, and engage effectively in national matters.

"Today, we honor not just the brave individuals who gave their lives for the establishment of democracy in Nigeria, but also the strong will of the Nigerian population who keep supporting democratic values even amidst numerous difficulties. Democracy provides each citizen with a chance to speak out and serves as the most effective foundation for harmonious national growth, fairness, and financial advancement," he said.

The head of the NOA highlighted that democracy extends beyond regular voting processes and demands ongoing public involvement, adherence to legal principles, acceptance of different viewpoints, sense of community duty, and dedication to the welfare of all.

He called on Nigerians, especially young people, to refuse false information, political aggression, inflammatory rhetoric, and any activities that could threaten unity within the nation and its democratic systems.

"As the organization tasked with advancing civic values, love for the country, and awareness of national identity, the National Orientation Agency continues to focus on enhancing democratic practices via ongoing efforts in voter education, civic instruction, public information campaigns, involvement within communities, and promotion of accountable citizen behavior," he further stated.

The head of the organization also praised the work of governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, customary authorities, faith-based leaders, the press, and international collaborators in supporting democratic leadership and encouraging harmony throughout the nation.

He urged all Nigerians to take advantage of Democracy Day to reaffirm their belief in the country's path toward democracy and collaborate in forging a more unified, tranquil, and thriving Nigeria.
