Addis Ababa, July 2, 2026 (ENA) – The European Union’s collaboration with Ethiopia is moving into an enhanced stage of increased partnerships in commerce, investments, and developmental efforts, stated EU Ambassador to Ethiopia, Sofie From-Emmesberger.
During an exclusive conversation with ENA, Ambassador From-Emmesberger noted that ties between Ethiopia and the European Union, fueled by growing cooperation in areas such as economy, development, education, and strategy, are moving in a favorable direction.
She emphasized the effective Ethiopia-EU Business Forum, where 250 European firms met with 250 Ethiopian businesses two months back to discover fresh commercial and investment prospects.
The European Union envoy also highlighted the removal of the visa regulation that once mandated Ethiopians to apply 45 days ahead of time when traveling to Europe, noting that this change has started promoting increased communication between both parties.
"this restriction has now been removed, and we have noticed that this is significantly aiding our efforts to increase interaction across various areas, including business and culture; additionally, your renowned athletes can now move about more easily because of this," she stated.
The envoy from Emmesberger characterized the action as a significant move in enhancing commercial relations and fostering interactions between citizens.
She stated that Ethiopia and the European Union have shared interests in several key areas, such as energy, digitization, agricultural industry, and health care.
There are numerous fields in which we have common interests and collaborate, whether it's in energy, digitalization, agricultural industry, healthcare — just to highlight the main areas.
The European Union is funding developments in Ethiopia via its Global Gateway program, aimed at encouraging long-term investment in allied nations. Within this structure, numerous significant infrastructure and green energy initiatives are underway, such as the RISED power project with participation from France and additional European collaborators, along with the Assela wind farm backed by Denmark.
The Envoy highlighted that the connection between Ethiopia, the European Union, and its individual countries stems from long-standing historical links, offering a solid base for enhancing collaboration in areas such as education, research, culture, and technological advancement.
She revealed that Ethiopian students have made impressive achievements through the Erasmus+ scholarship program, placing them among the leading beneficiaries worldwide this year.
"this year, ethiopian students secured positions within the global top 20 for erasmus+ scholarships," ambassador from-emmesberger stated.
The Erasmus+ initiative is the European Union's main program aimed at enhancing education, training, young people, and sports. With its Erasmus Mundus scholarship system, this program provides fully supported master's programs for Ethiopian students to attend top universities throughout Europe, simultaneously encouraging academic exchanges, research cooperation, and organizational collaborations.
She mentioned that academic exchanges are supported by increasing cultural collaboration facilitated by European cultural organizations based in Addis Ababa, as Ethiopian Airlines’ wide range of flights to European locations keeps enhancing personal ties between people.
The Envoy also highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts among multiple parties, pointing out that Ethiopia and the European Union will keep collaborating on environmental initiatives, such as planning for COP32 and advancing United Nations restructuring.
She highlighted Ethiopia's significance by pointing out its big population, growing economy, continuous reforms, key geographical position, young demographic, and role as the headquarters of the African Union.
Naturally, factors such as the population size, current economic opportunities following various opening measures and reforms, along with its strategically advantageous position play significant roles. A youthful demographic serves as a valuable asset, and Ethiopia’s role as the headquarters of the African Union further enhances its importance as a key collaborator.
In the future, the EU Ambassador mentioned that growing high-level exchanges and discussions between Ethiopia and the European Union have established an advantageous setting for more extensive cooperation in various fields.
"we are genuinely eager to work alongside the european union with ethiopia, as there is significant potential for joint efforts," she further stated.
The Ambassador from Emmesberger once again confirmed that the European Union continues to be dedicated to enhancing its collaboration with Ethiopia and intends to maintain close cooperation with the nation in tackling common global issues, promoting sustainable development, fostering economic expansion, and ensuring regional security.
